Darkfall is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated PC games in development. It has received close to twenty magazine covers and more than fifteen awards, including numerous Best MMO of E3 awards and the official Best Online Game of Show award at the GC convention 2007. Darkfall is a key title in Microsoft's Games for Windows line-up, as well as a showcase title for nVidia.
Combat is based on six directions of attacking an opponent with a sword: hacking down against the head, slashing diagonally down from the left and right, thrusting against the torso, and slashing diagonally up from the left or right. These directions are designed to be naturally strung together in combinations. Difficult combos cause additional damage and faster combat.
Funcom has said that their "Real Combat" system, a combat system designed to offer more real-time options than traditional Dungeons & Dragons-inspired "turn-based" combat systems commonly used in RPGs, will be a prime attraction of Darkfall: Hyborian Adventures. This Real Combat system is a first-person melee approach in which every enemy has five different areas that players can swing at. Combos can be performed by stringing together consecutive successful attacks in particular directions. Feedback from players have pointed out that the use of five directional "Combo-keys" along with the burgeoning amount of skills each character gets as they are developed, makes it difficult to pull off these maneuvers with ease to the player. This criticism has been brought up by not only reviewers, but fans of the game itself, citing "The game's combat system is more for evolved humans, who in the future will grow an additional two fingers to be able to reach the huge amount of key-bindings they'll have to make". Player stats and item bonuses will also play a role in this system, however in most cases, attributes from item bonuses (Strength, Dexterity) make such a minimal visual improvement (1 Dexterity = 0.002 DPS) over the character's progress, that item bonuses are almost completely nugatory. The idea of "Real Combat" is to eliminate the dullness of typical MMO fighting, which often consists of an auto-attack feature.
The "Real Combat" system is used in one-on-one weapon battle, as well as spell-casting, ranged combat and even mounted combat. In some situations, however, players will choose to band together and unite their skills to face other bands of players or AI controlled armies or uber-mobs; in essence, "formations", location based effects available for some classes. For example, a character standing in line with a Conqueror when he is running his formation will have a great deal of resistance to knockbacks.
Players are able to take part in large scale siege operations. However, further development into siege battles is still being worked on by developers because of player concerns of its dragging slowness with more than twenty participants in a battle. Adventurers can cooperate with one another to build cities with walls, towers and catapults that can protect player-owned taverns and merchant facilities. The developers have previously stated that the world will respond appropriately to the rise of player cities with AI controlled enemies building their own cities, ensuring a renewing supply of city-vs.-city combat as players try to knock down enemy walls or defend their homes.
Assassin
Necrotic Leech's particle effect should now properly move with the character as intended.
Barbarian
Butcher IX will temporarily use the same animation as Butcher VIII to circumvent a damage-scaling issue.
Conqueror
All ranks of Breach will now share a single animation to make higher ranks more viable in situations where time is of the essence.
Devastate now increases Hail of Furious Strikes damage by 1/2/3/4/5% (down from 2/4/6/8/10%).
Dark Templar
Leech Life IV has had its combo-starter changed from LR to UL.
Leech Life V has had its combo-starter changed from LL to UL.
Leech Life VI has had its combo-starter changed from LR to UR.
Dooming Presence's fear effect is now breakable by Agile Mind.
Demonologist
Fixed multiple issues with the Demonic Warlord pet not correctly getting the bonus for all ranks of pet-augmenting feats. Fixed an issue where the Demon Familiar pet was not getting the bonus from rank 1 of Fury of the Underworld.
The demons the Demonlogist can summon have new textures.
Fixed a bug with the Overload Feat making Inferno of Amher overwrite itself when it reached a stack size of 2.
Guardian
At level 10 you will now gain a new ability - Reckoning. You will be able to use this immediately after using a Flashing Arc, Disable or Storm Strike combo to inflict damage on the target, or around you in the case of using it after Storm Strike. If used after Disable, you will regain some stamina. It is intentional that this only works with pole arm combos. All existing guardians will get this ability when they next log in. It inflicts more damage when you are in frenzy stance.
Herald of Xotli
Hell Strikes VI should now play the proper animation on Female characters.
Rage of Xotli reduced to increase the damage of Hell Strike by 1/2/3% (Down from 3/6/9%).
Inferno curse now applies Elemental Ruin instead of Elemental Wrack. It will not stack with the debuff applied through Molten Steel Slash etc. Cooldown has been increased to 45s.
Bonds of Anguish has been removed and replaced with Chains of Anguish. This is a short duration, fast casting damage over time spell. When the damage triggers, that target and any others between the target and the herald will take damage. There is a synergy between Chains of Anguish and Clarity of the Mad, in that while Chains of Anguish is running, you will gain a 33/66/100% resistance to stun and fear effects based on the number of feats in Clarity of the Mad.
Necromancer
The Blood Arcanist pet is now able to properly trigger Cabal. Fixed the proc rate of Cabal for the Archmagus pet (it was way too low). The Blood Arcanist pet now correctly has its AOE radius increased by the Empowered Archmagus feat, just like the Archmagus pet.. Corrected the proc rate of Spiritual Torment gained from the rank 1 and rank 2 Grim Hunger feats for the Blood Arcanist and Archmagus pets (it was too low).
Corrected an issue with DoTs to ensure that you will always get all ticks off each spell.
Frenzy should no longer interrupt pet actions.
Pets should be a lot more responsive after killing their target.
The attack command should always lock nero pets to the selected target even if you are in assist mode.
Particle effects in Necromancer pet spells should no longer appear long after the "throw spell" animation.
All Necromancer caster pets now have casting animations.
Gelid Bones will now show the damage in the tooltip for both minions and non-minions.
Priest of Mitra
Exorcism cast time has been reduced to 1 second.
Spellweaving for Priest of Mitra should now work the same as Demo and Necro spellweaving. When rank 6 is reached, you should always have 6% magic damage increase initally (excluding other beneficial spells triggered from spellweaving). This will gradually scale up to 25% magic damage increase for every refresh of spellweaving rank 6.
Ranger
Heavy Bolts should increase the DoT damage on Flesh Ripper.
Tempest of Set
Fixed Empowered Cobra Stare. It now correctly lowers the break chance by 33/66/100% .
Cast time of Storm Nimbus has been reduced to 1.5s.
Spellweaving for Tempest of Set should now work the same as Demo and Necro spellweaving. When rank 6 is reached, you should always have 6% magic damage increase initally (excluding other beneficial spells triggered from spellweaving). This will gradually scale up to 25% magic damage increase for every refresh of spellweaving rank 6.
Armor
Succeeding in battle takes more than just a good weapon. It also requires that you have the right outfit to defend yourself properly from the attacks of your enemy. Armor is divided into different types such as cloth, leather, plate and more.
Here is some of the armor types explained:
Cloth armor
This material provides the least amount of defense, but allows the wearer more freedom of movement. Mostly used by casters and in various types of social clothing.
Light armor
This is used to categorize armor types such as leather and hide which is stronger than cloth, but still fairly weak. Some casters can use this, and most if not all melee-oriented characters.
Medium armor
This is used to categorize armor types such as chainmail and splintmail. Considerably stronger than the armor types above and mostly reserved for melee-oriented characters.
Heavy armor
This is used to categorize armor types such as halfplate and fullplate. This is some of the strongest armor you can find, and it can only be used by skilled melee-oriented characters.
Shields armor
Some character classes can equip a shield to aid them in battle. Shields can be heavy and hard to manage, so only the most able fighters are able to use them when fighting enemies.
Weapons
Battling your way across Hyboria is no easy task. You’ll want to wield the best weapons that money can buy (or that can be pried from the corpses from your enemies).
Here are some important examples of weapons:
Edged weapons
This is mostly used to categorize various types of swords, weapons designed to slice, cut and make your enemy bleed! Can be used in one hand, two hands or dual wield.
Blunt weapons
This is mostly used to categorize various types of clubs and maces. Weapons designed to smash your enemies to a pulp! Can be used in one hand, two hands or dual wield.
Dagger weapons
This is mostly used to categorize various types of daggers, weapons designed to allow you to strike at your enemy swiftly! Can be used in one hand, two hands or dual wield.
Bow weapons
This is mostly used to categorize various types of bows and crossbows. These are designed to hit your target from a reasonably safe distance! These always require both hands.
Thrown weapons
This is mostly used to categorize weapons that your character can throw, such as knives and even some spears. Can be thrown from a distance, but nowhere near as far away as bows!
Polearm weapons
This is mostly used to categorize various types of polearms, lances and such. Weapons designed to create some distance between you and your enemy! Always requires both hands.
